A Tennessee state senator has been charged after the Volunteer State discovered she used over $600,000 of federal funds to finance her dream wedding and high-taste lifestyle.
Democratic lawmaker Katrina Robinson of Memphis reportedly swindled grant funds issued to a company that she owned, known as The Healthcare Institute, over a period of four years.
The money was utilized to pay for a wedding, honeymoon, divorce, a 2016 Jeep Renegade, home improvements, a $500 Louis Vuitton handbag and a snow cone business.
According to the the New York Post, the lawmaker was charged with embezzlement, theft and wire fraud.
Despite facing federal charges, the lawmaker appeared anything but contrite or remorseful, instead propping herself up as a champion of the people.
“It is believed that if I were not in the position that I’m in, that if I did not champion the voices, the views and the faces that I represent, that I would not be in this moment right now,” Robinson said.
Tennessee’s state Senate Democratic Caucus has expressed no interest in reprisals, stating that Robinson’s work is not in question and that she has the right to due process.
