Update: During the second period of last night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche, Pierre-Luc Dubois stuck out his knee to take out Colorado’s Fredrik Olofsson, drawing a tripping penalty in the process.
The collision led to a scuffle between players but rookie Laferriere got into a heated scrap with Logan O’Connor.
Both players landed some punches with their right hands, but it ended when Laferriere used an MMA style takedown to slam O’Connon on the ice -something that made his spectating parents very proud.

The dream will become reality for former Chatham player Alex Laferriere on Wednesday night.
Just over three years after being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round, he is set to make his NHL debut in the team’s season opener against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.
Laferriere played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Chatham High School, helping lead the Cougars to the NJSIAA Public C final in 2017-18 and posting 19 goals and 20 assists over those two seasons. He departed for prep hockey at the Kent School in Connecticut after his sophomore year, then moved on to the Des Moines Buccaneers of the US Hockey League.
He was finally picked by the Kings in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
After two successful seasons at Harvard University, Laferriere, now 21, is making the jump to the NHL after signing a three-year, entry-level contract in April. He netted three goals and added an assist in five preseason games, which opened the eyes of Kings coach Todd McLellan and ultimately led to Laferriere cracking the team’s opening night roster.

Following the collision, a number of players from both teams came together, and eventually, Laferriere got into a heated scrap with Logan O’Connor.
