Missouri teenager Kaylee Gain likely never suspected the violent altercation on March 8, where she was assaulted by another female student, would result in severe brain injuries that will likely leave a lifelong impact.
In fact, she doesn’t remember the event at all.
“Kaylee suffered brain bleeding, can’t walk by herself and now ‘talks in a loop’ as she struggles to recover from the life-altering brutal school beatdown,” detailed Clinton Gain, Kaylee’s father.
The parents have been determined to get to the root of the “why” behind the savage beating by student Maurnice DeClue.
“We combed through Kaylee’s device to understand what led to the caught-on-video clash,” shared Jamie Gain, Kaylee’s stepmother, highlighting the family’s efforts to investigate the incident.
“The conflict escalated after Kaylee got into a fight at school with DeClue’s friend,” explained Clinton Gain, shedding light on the events preceding the altercation.
“They both agreed to the fight, to meet up and settle what was going on,” Clinton Gain revealed, describing the agreement reached between Kaylee and her assailant.
However, the situation got out of hand, and the Gain family wants DeClue tried as an adult.
“We hope the justice system sees that she went way overboard and nearly killed her,” remarked Jamie Gain, expressing concerns over the severity of the assault and seeking accountability.
The road to recovery has been tough, and Gain will likely never be her old self again.
“I was just really concerned, really worried when I first saw her in the hospital,” recounted Jamie Gain, reflecting on the emotional turmoil following Kaylee’s hospitalization.
“Some days are better than others,” Clinton Gain shared, providing insight into Kaylee’s recovery process at a St. Louis hospital.
“She speaks, but it doesn’t always make sense,” Jamie Gain added, describing Kaylee’s challenges with communication following the altercation.
Still, there is some glimmer of hope.
“She says ‘Hii dad’ when she sees me. She knows it’s me,” Clinton Gain shared, highlighting moments of recognition amidst Kaylee’s recovery journey.
The location of the fight, according to the New York Post, was no coincidence.
“The altercation took place at a location known for hosting teen fights,” stated Clinton Gain, contextualizing the circumstances surrounding the violent incident.
On the legal side of things, the prosecution plans to show no quarter.
“Prosecutors are now attempting to charge DeClue as an adult in the case,” Clinton Gain confirmed, addressing the legal implications of the altercation.
“It’s been really hard. It’s very slow. When she gets out of the hospital she’s going to live with me,” Clinton Gain affirmed, expressing his commitment to supporting Kaylee throughout her recovery.
