An Arizona police officer and hostage negotiator is more than just a lady of the law- she’s a Miss Arizona pageant winner setting her sights on being Miss USA.
Tempe Police Officer Candace Kanavel, who is the acting negotiator on the city’s SWAT team, is not just fit for duty.
When she isn’t patrolling, she’s performing in high-tier pageants.
For Kanavel, it comes naturally.
“A lot of the qualities that I have to have as an officer translate directly to my role as Miss Arizona USA and vice versa. I have to be a really good communicator. I have to be a leader. I have to be able to be flexible with whatever’s going on and work through different situations,” she told ABC15.
As the head of the #YesSheCan platform, Kanavel stated that she helps in both fields.
“When I’m in my police uniform, I’m empowered to help people,” Kanavel said. “And when I’m in my sash and crown, I’m empowered to help people. And so I’m doing the same job, just in a different uniform.”
After winning Miss Arizona, Kanavel won’t stop there— she wants the Miss USA title.
“I want to give people who aren’t in law enforcement a little insight into what officers are like,” Kanavel said. “We have hobbies, we have families, we have all these different things outside of what we do for a living.”
The Miss USA pageant will be broadcast live on the CW channel on September 29.
