Just when men thought dating apps couldn’t get worse, popular platforms such as Tinder and Bumble are turning into “Red Light Districts” for women trying to hock OnlyFans subscriptions.
While dating apps have been in rapid decline since the late twenty-teens, there’s now a far bigger problem than lopsided male-to-female ratios, TikTok-inspired height demands, scammers, and seemingly endless legions of single moms who say their kids are their “whole world.”
A recent trend on multiple dating apps is for the small number of female users to act as if they are looking for dates, only to match and plug their OnlyFans accounts.
Similarly, the profile bios often link to Instagram accounts, which in turn link to Linktree, which ultimately reveal OF accounts.
Ironically, many of these accounts belong to self-proclaimed feminists and socialists/Marxists, who seemingly take no issue with objectifying themselves in the name of capitalism.
In the dating app realm, men —who vastly outnumber women— must often compete for ridiculous demands that often do not match with reality: from demanding a man be over 6 feet tall (the average height of a man in the US is 5’9″, and only 14 percent or so of men are over 6′, not excluding married men), incomes over six figures (As of February 2024, the average income for an American man is $63,960), left-leaning political ideologies (the average American male skews moderate to conservative), as well as a myriad of other demands.
In response to unrealistic dating requirements, calculators were made to show the likelihood of both women and men getting what they desire, using survey statistics.
According to Zippia, the male-to-female ratio on Tinder in the USA as of 2023 was 3 to 1, with males making up 75% of users identifying as male and 24.2% identifying as female.
In some countries, the male-to-female disparity is quite different For example, in India, the ratio is 62% to 38%, while in Europe it is closer to 50/50.
However, as far as the US dating scene goes, the abundance of males and shortage of women makes for a less-than-great experience for even the top percent of desirable men— especially when the person you’re matching with may be a bot or online prostitute selling her wares and/or explicit media.
Not unlike Tinder, Bumble also has a 3:1 ratio between male and females, with a much lower response rate post-match beacuse women are required to message the men first (a selling point of the platform).
Tinder is owned by the Match Group, along with Hinge, Match, Meetic, OkCupid, Pairs, Plenty Of Fish, Azar, and Hakuna.
Matchlab owns Bumble, along with Lumen, Badoo and Chappy.
In February of 2024, Bumble, an online dating app, reported a $32 million net loss, or 11.7% of revenue, for the fourth quarter of 2023.
