ANTIOCH, Illinois — A 10-year-old boy suffered multiple fractures to his face and legs Sunday when he was thrown from a ride at a carnival, according to police.
The boy was flown by helicopter to two hospitals because of his extensive injuries, but they are not considered life threatening, a news release from the Antioch Police Department says.
Emergency workers were called to the Antioch Chamber of Commerce Taste of Summer carnival at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday after the boy reportedly was thrown from the Moby Dick ride.
The boy first was flown to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., then was then flown Sunday night to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, police say. The boy had multiple facial and jaw fractures, and a significant injury to the bones in one leg.
Although the injuries were not considered life-threatening, the boy was listed in critical but stable condition Monday morning after undergoing surgery, police say.
Antioch Police Chief Guttschow says it’s investigating the incident to “determine if any criminally reckless or negligent acts may have been contributing factors to what occurred.” He said the department will work with the Lake County state’s attorney to see if criminal charges should be filed.
The city’s mayor ordered all rides at the carnival be shut down after the incident. An investigation by the Illinois Department of Labor is underway to determine what caused the incident.
Police say the Illinois Department of Labor, Amusement Ride and Attraction Safety Division will assist in the investigation and will conduct “bolt by bolt” inspection of the ride before allowing it operate elsewhere.
