Alan Shepard, an American naval aviator, test pilot, and astronaut was the second person in space on a ship named ‘Freedom 7’. Although the flight did not achieve orbit, Shepard became the first to manually control a spacecraft’s orientation.

Shepard commanded Apollo 14 after an inner ear problem was corrected, and is the only person on this list that has been to the surface of the moon.
