The team formerly known as the Washington Redskins will soon be announcing their new name- and it won’t be one of the favorites chosen by polled fans.
The team -which is currently going by the bland moniker “Washington Football Team- has announced that they will have a new name by February, but “Wolves” and/or “RedWolves” won’t be making the cut.
“First, and I’ll cut to the chase here, we can confirm that, after careful consideration, our team name will not be Wolves or RedWolves,” said Jason Wright, the team’s president. “One of the most awesome and powerful aspects of this process has been getting to hear and understand your preferences directly, and we know that many of you loved one or both of these names. And because of that, we want to share some context behind our decision not to move forward with these names. You all deserve nothing less.”
Wright claimed that trademarks held by other teams was the main reason the two most popular selections would not be considered.
“Understanding the weight and importance of our team name, and excitement around other name options — both internally and within our fan base — we didn’t want to risk going down a route that could be dotted with legal hurdles,” he said in a statement posted to the team website. “The prospect of years of litigation wasn’t something that we wanted you, our fans, to have to bear as you begin to embrace a new brand.”
The new, proper team name will be announced on February 2nd of this year (2/2/22), and Wright is confident that the new, litigation-friendly and politically-correct team name will be a hit with fans.
“We are confident that this identity is one that our team and our fans across D.C., Maryland, Virginia and beyond can rally behind for another 90 years and more as we continue to cheer on the Burgundy & Gold in this next chapter,” he said.
