Black belt, no more.
World Taekwondo, the International Federation that governs the sport, revoked Russian president Vladimir Putin’s black belt status this week.
The organization spoke out against Russian military activity in Ukraine, pointing to its motto: “Peace is more precious than triumph”.
World Taekwondo added that the “brutal attacks on innocent lives” went against their values.
“In this regard, World Taekwondo has decided to withdraw the honorary 9th dan black belt conferred to Mr. Vladimir Putin in November 2013,” the governing body said in a statement.
“World Taekwondo’s thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and we hope for a peaceful and immediate end to this war,” it added.
The organization reportedly will also ban the Russian flag and anthem at its events.
The International Judo Federation said on Sunday it would suspend Putin’s status as honorary president and ambassador, as well.
