The former Arkansas teacher, who pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges after officials say she committed sex acts with a student as many as 30 times, has been sentenced.
Heather Hare, 33, was a family consumer science teacher at Bryant High School in Little Rock, when she met her victim, a high school senior, on the first day of the 2021-2022 school.
After Hare began having one-on-one counseling sessions with the student, she gave him her personal phone number which she used to communicate with the 17-year-old student -identified as J.R.- in addition to her Instagram and Snapchat accounts.
“At one point, Ms. Hare told J.R. that she had a dream of them having sex,” Assistant US Attorney John Ray White said during Hare’s sentencing hearing.
Hare engaged in sexual activity with the student 20 to 30 times during the school year at her home, in her vehicle, in her classroom, and the school parking lot.
Hare, who was married at the time of the crimes, was also accused of abusing the student including a class trip to Washington, DC.
“J.R. advised they planned to have sex on the trip and not have to worry about being caught,” White said. “Hare did come to his hotel room and the two engaged in sex.”
She was ordered to serve 13 years in prison for the federal crimes and with 20 years to be served concurrently for her Arkansas state crimes.
“This former teacher took advantage of her position of trust and the vulnerability of a minor, using her role to entice and lure this minor into engaging in unlawful sexual activity,” United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas Jonathan D. Ross said.
“Teachers who have sex with their minor students should take note of today’s sentence for Ms. Hare which reflects the consequences of abusing her position of trust and taking advantage of the vulnerability of this minor to repeatedly engage in unlawful sexual activity,” he added.
