A Massachusetts man commissioned into the US Army this week, receiving his first salute from his coronavirus-stricken grandfather from behind a pane of glass.
Richard Hanafin, who is recovering at a VA Hospital in Bedford, saluted 2LT Tommy Hanafin in a historical and memorable moment for the junior officer.
According to WCVB, the senior Hanafin has had a few good moments lately during his recovery, including being allowed to see his wife of 64 years for the first time in two months.
For 2LT Hanafin, the moment was truly special.
“Today I shared a very special moment with my grandfather,” he wrote on Facebook. “I was able to visit him at the Veterans home (through a window) and have him as my first salute.”
It is unknown what unit Hanafin will be going to.
