A Soldier stepped in for their battle buddy, posing as a non-commissioned officer to rid their friend of an unwelcome “catfish.”
A video posted to social media depicts a young junior enlisted Soldier walking into an Army barracks room with a little more authority than their true rank could afford them.
The reason? his battle buddy was “catfished” on a dating app.
“Catfishing” is the act of creating a fake online identity using false information and images to trick, harass, or scam another person. One of the more frequent tactics of catfishing [particularly when executed by women] is “iceberging,” AKA using deceptive photography methods to appear less overweight.
Such was the case in the incident involving the two servicemembers, as the camera would reveal a rather overweight woman who had little interest in leaving her new date’s barracks room.
However, the Serviceman’s colleague appeared just in time, posing as a non-commissioned officer and claiming a barracks inspection was about to begin.
“You gotta go, he gotta do barracks checks,” the soldier told the plus-sized woman.
The Soldier informed the woman that she could not stay there and even pretended to chastise his faux subordinate for forgetting a barracks inspection was scheduled.
“I’m going to tell first sergeant,” the soldier said.
The move highlights not only the responsibilities of having a good wingman, but also the dangers of online dating.
