A British singer named FKA Twigs spoke openly about her alleged abusive relationship with actor Shia LaBeouf, including revealing that he reportedly shot animals to prepare for a film.
Speaking with the publication known as Elle, FKA Twigs -whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett- recounted the abuses she suffered under the Transformers actor and how his tactic of manipulation often led to her sticking around for further mistreatment.
“I think it’s luck,” Barnett said. “I honestly wish I could say that I found some strength and I saw this light. I wish I could say, ‘a testament to my strong character,’ or ‘It’s the way my mother raised me.’ It’s none of that. It’s pure luck that I’m not in that situation anymore.”
Barnett and LaBeouf began dating after meeting on the set of the 2017 film Honey Boy, the two eventually lived under the same roof.
After I moved into his house, that’s when the abuse really escalated,” she explained. “I realized then I wasn’t just dealing with a tortured person who was going through a divorce. Or that outside factors in his life [were] making him act out on me.”
According to the Consequence of Sound, LaBeouf had a “kiss quota” and made Barnett strip naked and watch graphic crime documentaries before bed.
LaBeouf, who owns a firearm despite numerous run-ins with law enforcement, bragged about shooting stray dogs to prepare for his role in the 2020 film “The Tax Collector.”
“I said to him, ‘That’s really bad. Why are you doing that?’” Barnett said. “And he was like, ‘Because I take my art seriously. You’re not supporting me in my art. This is what I do. It’s different from singing. I don’t just get up on a stage and do a few moves. I’m in the character.’ He made me feel bad, like I didn’t understand what it was like to be an actor or to do this…Method [acting technique].”
LaBeouf also reportedly gave Barnett an STD without informing her, previously hiding his symptoms with makeup.
In May of 2019, Barnett made her escape, and a lawsuit against the actor followed shortly after following a breakdown in negotiations.
“If you put a frog in a boiling pot of water, that frog is going to jump out straightaway,” she said. “Whereas if you put a frog in cool water and heat it up slowly, that frog is going to boil to death. That was my experience being with [LaBeouf].”
