South American-born singer, dancer, and songwriter Shakira turned 44 today, giving us several decades of mesmerizing performances.
Born in Barranquilla, Colombia on February 2, 1977, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is the only child of William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado.
The daughter of a Lebanese-American father, Shakira was born within a devout Catholic home and had attended Catholic schools.
Initially watching her father write during her childhood, Shakira eventually began to write poetry and songs on her own.
Initially rejected by the school choir because her strong vibrato sounded “like a goat,” she eventually found her way by learning how to perform belly dancing and tuning her voice.
Taking the local scene later in life, she eventually broke into the US music industry during the turn of the millennium.
While it was her fifth album overall, her first English language album, titled “Laundry Service,” was released on 13 November 2001.
Needless to say, the Western World fell in love with Shakira, and she’s been a star ever since.
The mother-of-two currently owns homes in Spain, the United States, and the Bahamas.
