The co-founder of ocean-centric apparel brand Salt Life has been arrested for manslaughter after he admitted to killing his 18-year-old girlfriend in a Florida hotel.
Michael Troy Hutto, aged 54, appeared in video-court on Monday, where a judge set his bond at $255,000.
Hutto, who was also slapped with a firearm charge, told police that he had accidentally shot his girlfriend, Lora Grace Duncan, while they were “playing” in the Riviera Beach Hilton hotel room.
RBPD arrived on scene at the behest of Duncan’s parents, who had not heard from their daughter and requested a welfare check.
According to The Mercury News, the room was rented in Hutto’s name, and many of his personal effects were there.
Hutto, however, was at the hospital, having been taken there by ambulance after he was found 300 miles north of the hotel, twitching, shaking and babbling incoherently.
Hutto admitted to accidentally shooting “Gracie,” and was taken into custody.
The incident took place at the end of October, and Salt Life has since distanced themselves from Hutto.
“Sadly we have learned one of Salt Life’s co-founders has been charged with a felony,” Salt Life representatives said in the tweet. “Salt Life sends their utmost sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. In 2013, the co-founders of Salt Life sold their entire business to the new owners.”
