Queen Elizabeth II has died, according to Buckingham Palace officials.
The longest-reigning monarch reportedly went out in a quiet and dignified manner in Scotland earlier this afternoon.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
According to Reuters, Elizabeth’s eldest son, Charles, has become the King of the United Kingdom and head of state for 14 other realms, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Queen Elizabeth II first came to power in 1952, and began her reign at age 25.
