As you continue west through southern Germany there are several idyllic towns and villages, but none quite like Speyer. Located on the Rhine river in southwest Germany, Speyer is known for its traditional architecture and famous cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The cathedral is the largest remaining Romanesque church in Europe and its crypt is home to 8 medieval emperors and kings of the Holy Roman Empire.

Originally founded by the Romans in 10 B.C., Speyer is also one of Germany’s oldest cities.
