What do Lady Gaga and several beheaded, Marie Antoinettes have in common?
They all performed in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday.
As the world watched the boat procession of athletes down the Sein, several women dressed in red gowns holding severed heads appeared in the windows of the Conciergerie.
It was the image of Marie Antoinette on display in the very place she was once prisoned.
Here’s what people are saying about the headless Marie Antoinettes and their musical performance:
“Headless Marie Antoinette is brat,” CNN Anchor Jake Tapper posted to X.
“Y’all the Olympics just took off Marie Antoinette’s head while playing French metal music? This is the craziest sh— I’ve ever seen,” author John Green posted.
“Give the singing beheaded Marie Antoinette all the medals #Olympics #OpeningCeremony,” one X user said.
“Thousands mocked Marie Antoinette when she was led to her execution: millions are laughing at her memory tonight. There are more edifying memories to celebrate in Paris’ history than the humiliation, degradation, and execution of their Queen. #OpeningCeremony,” posted another.
“The headless Marie Antoinette montage with classical and heavy metal music made me realize I really just phoned in my AP French final exam when I dressed up as Marie Antoinette as an excuse to wear a tiara to school. #Olympics” – another said.
“headless marie antoinette opening ceremony is metal af,” another posted.
