Katie Moon won the silver medal Wednesday in the women’s pole vault, pairing it with her gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Moon was unable to clear 4.95 meters (about 16 feet, 3 inches), with Australia’s Nina Kennedy winning the gold with a vault of 4.90 meters. Moon missed her first attempt at that 4.90, but she passed on her last two tries at that height to go for 4.95.
But Moon, a graduate of Olmsted Falls High School, wasn’t disappointed with a silver medal.
“It means everything. This year has been so difficult,” said Moon, 33-year-old, referring to her Achilles’ heel, which has been causing her some pain. “To win a medal with my family here, it’s just so special, it’s so surreal, I’m so happy.”
Moon said she woke up Wednesday not feeling her best.
“Any other competition, I might have pulled out and rested up and got ready for the next one. But I think to miss the Olympics, I’d have to be up with my dad (in heaven),” she said.
Alysha Newman of Canada took the bronze.
