The Empire State Building lit up green after the Philadelphia Eagles took the NFC championship and punched the team’s ticket to the Super Bowl, drawing hundreds of angry responses from furious New Yorkers.
The sight may have struck the nerve of Giants fans still suffering from last week’s playoff loss, but the act was not a surprising one: the building’s website shows its lights will honor both the winners of the NFC and AFC championships.
That means either the Cincinnati Bengals or the Kansas City Chiefs (who remained locked in their AFC championship battle at the time of this writing) will have one of their colors grace the top of one of the city’s most memorable buildings.
Past conference winners, including the Patriots, have also had their colors honored en-route to the Super Bowl.
Still, the move prompted confusion and fury on social media.
“I’m soooo confused”, wrote Terrika Foster-Brasby, an ESPN reporter. Her colleague, ESPN journalist Mina Kimes, playfully asked if the building lost a bet.
Others were off-put by the effort.
“eh this ain’t it”, wrote Manhattan City Councilman Justin Brannan.
Did y’all lose a bet
