Protesters in Seattle have created their own “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ) in the Washington state metropolis, but the mainstream media hasn’t really touched upon the issue.
The CHAZ has been a staple of social media posts for some time now, but mentions of the far-left Seattle settlement -which encompasses a six-block area that was taken over by armed radicals after the police abandoned it- have been rare on TV news.
According to Fox News, the evening news on several networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) did not mention the “autonomous zone” until Wednesday, nearly a week since the zone was established.
While the case of Fox calling out other networks for looking the other way is a case of the “pot calling the kettle black” when factoring in similar instances in the past, but the takeover is rather serious business- and Fox wasn’t the only ones who noticed.
“It has been days since this nonsense had started and the broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC — have kept it off the air,” Media Research Center news analyst Nicholas Fondacaro wrote in a statement. “The networks were busy trying to make the recent nationwide protests seem reasonable by ignoring radical provocations such as the ‘autonomous zone.”
Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics also denounced the silence in a tweet.
“Media bias is not just in the stories that get covered, but the ones that don’t,” he wrote. “Total blackout on the insanity in Seattle on major news websites: ABC News, NBC News, CBS News.”
While DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall believes the “chaos in Seattle is basically the next step in the movement to defund the police” and “generally dismantle” society as we know it for a more radical-left cause, it has gone largely overlooked.
“The traditional media loved covering those earlier protest stories because of their dramatic, sensational, and counter-cultural tone. But the escalation of the Seattle demonstrations into the actual closing of a portion of the city is a bridge too far for even a sympathetic media to cover with an approving nod,” McCall told Fox News.
At the end of the day, it seems, the media has found their far-left heroes to be more than they can handle, particularly in relation to Antifa.
From riots to taking over sections of cities, the antics of the group and its act-alikes may simply be followed by media silence- at least until a media-friendly solution can be devised.
“The latest chaos in Seattle is not merely a political statement, but an anarchy that even the progressive mainstream press just can’t appear to be advocating,” McCall said. “Thus, it is better to leave the story off the agenda, or to at least minimize it, rather than show light on it and have to try to explain it into proper context.”
