Locals protest over video of Turkish soldier beating kitten

A video of a cat being tortured by a Turkish soldier has outraged locals in the eastern province of Erzincan.

An unidentified soldier, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, tortured a kitten in front of a military barracks on Dec. 3.

Surveillance cameras mounted on the building captured the 25-year-old soldier kicking and punching the small animal numerous times.

Police have since captured the suspect and detected him to be under the influence of alcohol, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

The soldier attempted to excuse his actions in a testimony given to the prosecutors office. He said he was in a bad psychological state because he broke up with his girlfriend three days prior to the incident.

Locals reportedly gathered in front of his barracks to protest the incident. The crowd chanted to demand punishment for the soldier.

The soldier was handed over to the military police by local authorities.

The Turkish Interior Minister, Süleyman Soylu, made a statement about the incident on Twitter.

“I will investigate the incident immediately. Forensic and administrative investigations have started,” said Soylu.
