It was all eyes on the ladies in latex.
Three curvy women clad head to toe in body-hugging black latex strode to the lectern at Fort Lauderdale City Hall Tuesday night like they were on a mission. The entire commission chambers appeared spellbound — or was it dumbstruck — as Mistress Krave, the trio’s ponytailed leader, demanded the city dedicate $250,000 to a dungeon for the S&M community.
“I look forward to spanking each and every single one of you at the new esteemed dungeon,” the masked dominatrix told a stunned commission. “You are dismissed.”
As they made their exit, Mayor Dean Trantalis had this graceful response, delivered with a chuckle: “OK. Thank you. And happy holidays to you.”
Within hours, social media was abuzz with comments about how the bizarre visit spiced up what might have been a dull and tame government meeting.
“People around the country are saying, ‘You gotta love Florida. We wish our commission meetings were like this,’” Commissioner John Herbst said Wednesday.
The theatrical appearance turned out to be a publicity stunt for Krave, a Miami club slated to open in February.
It was truly hard not to look away, say those who were in the room. Didn’t matter if you were gay or straight, male or female.
Herbst managed to keep a poker face through it all, but had a bit of a heads up before the meeting began. While he was at the city’s holiday party upstairs, friends sent him photos of the three women all dolled up in their bondage suits.
Herbst said he tried to warn the mayor as they took the elevator down to the meeting.
“This is apparently what’s waiting for us downstairs,” Herbst said while holding up the photo.
Longtime resident Bill Brown, who happened to be seated in the same row with the surprise visitors, managed to sneak his own photo.
Brown says he’s been to hundreds of City Hall meetings, but has never seen quite such a spectacle.
“When they walked in I was standing with two firefighters and we were all speechless,” Brown said. “Some were there with their wives. They were really taken aback.”
Mistress Krave could not be reached for comment.
An associate told the South Florida Sun Sentinel she was too busy spanking other reporters to come to the phone.
Trantalis, Fort Lauderdale’s first gay mayor, says he took it all in stride.
“Being a member of the gay community all my life, I’m used to people expressing themselves in creative ways,” he said. “It didn’t bother me. Everyone is welcome to speak in our city. It all added to the yuletide splendor.”
Herbst, for one, was glad he didn’t have to run the meeting.
“These are the nights I’m glad I’m not the mayor,” he said with a chuckle. “I don’t know if I would have come up with ‘Happy holidays to you.’”
Herbst said he kept his focus on the agenda, not the three mistresses. But some couldn’t help but gawk.
“It was a combination of shock and awe,” Herbst said. “Everyone was waiting to see what they were going to say and do. And it didn’t disappoint. If they do start showing up on a regular basis, I think our viewership will go up.”
