Ugly, ugly scene in the handshake line. A Memphis player punched Elissa Brett. Just brutal. pic.twitter.com/2hptXYBEtj
The Bowling Green Lady Falcons may have won the NIT playoff basketball game on their home court Thursday night, but they lost a battle after a Memphis player landed a punch on a player during the team’s handshake.
According to ESPN, Bowling Green won 73-60 over the Memphis Tigers, and during the usually anti-climatic handshake line at the end of the game, Memphis’ Jamirah Shutes started jawing and then threw a punch at Bowling Green’s Elissa Brett.
In the video, Shutes is immediately pushed back by a teammate and held in check. Bowling Green players immediately come to Brett’s side as she lay on the floor in pain.
Because the incident happened on Bowling Green’s campus, the athletic department has turned the investigation over to campus police, who have the authority to pursue charges.
Bowling Green’s coach is unsure of what caused Shutes to throw the punch, and Memphis has not commented on the incident.
Shutes did leave the game briefly in the first quarter when she took an elbow to the face. The fifth-year guard led the team in scoring and did return.
