Emily Ratajkowski’s first Non-Fungible Token has sold for $140,000, proving that some people will pay money for just about anything.
In less than six minutes of bidding, the Christie’s auction house sold the NFT to a mystery buyer in New York.
The NFT is titled, “Buying Myself Back: A Model for Redistribution.”
In a 2020 essay, the model said she was paid $150 for the image, which was part of a Sports Illustrated shoot.
Artist Richard Prince bought co-opted the image, and Ratajkowski bought it back for $80,000.
Now, the buyer of the NFT will help her reclaim the image after it was allegedly “wrested from her for another’s profit.”
According to the New York Post, the model claims “NFTs carry the potential to allow women ongoing control over their image and the ability to receive rightful compensation for its usage and distribution.”
