For some, pineapples are just a tasty fruit but for others, they are used as a secret code.
Sometimes referred to as “swingers” or those looking for some sexual experimentation use them in various ways to send out an invitation to other couples who might be interested.
While most never think about how they place pineapple in their cart when shopping but TikTok users are now showing you why they should.
Videos with the hashtag #UpsideDownPineapple are trending and racking up millions of views.
Daily Star reports the origin of the upside-down Pineapple symbol is hard to trace but Men’s Health reported the symbol within the partner-swapping community beginning in the 1990s.
“An upside-down pineapple – worn on clothing, as jewellery, as welcome mats or hung on doors as a poster – is a subtle signal that someone is a swinger or actively looking for a swinging party,” Daily Star reports.
The message was seemingly meant to be a subtle message but in the age of social media, TikTokers are not shy about showing their swinger lifestyle.
“Making a TikTok to get the swingers party started,” one TikTok post reads with “Take a Shot and Make a TikTok” playing in the background.
Another TikToker revealed he found numerous upside pineapples around the AirBnB he had rented.
“When we all pull up the AirBnB we rented for the weekend and see this…,” the video said while showing doormats with upside-down pineapples.

A mother in Tennessee posted a collection of vehicles she found with the same upside pineapple stickers.
After being invited to a neighbor’s pool in Texas, a mother posted to TikTok to reveal she spotted upside-down prints of pineapples on display.
Besides exposing possible swingers on TikTok, another trend is couples testing out symbols at the grocery store.
“I love these fun little experiments we do,” Karissa wrote on TikTok. “Apparently this is something swingers do but we are definitely not swingers,” she said.
After pushing a shopping cart with the message on display she said, “so far we have had two looks,” with excitement.
While people are enjoying the new trend on TikTok, it is more common for swingers to just use pineapple emojis in their online profiles to signify they are swingers.
