A Mexican beauty pageant queen has been arrested on suspicion of belonging to a gang of kidnappers.
Laura M. Romero may spend up to half a century behind bars for being one of “eight alleged members of a criminal organization specializing in kidnapping”.
Three women and five men were arrested in total, including the three-time pageant winner.
Originally running as Miss Oaxaca 2015 and 2018 during an annual regional beauty contest in Mexico, Romero eventually took on the 2020 International Queen of Coffee beauty pageant in Colombia.
Romero speaks fluent English and is a business studies graduate, who previously went public about her concern over violence against women.
“We can’t stand idly by, we have to eradicate violence against women, through campaigns and educational talks that make men aware of this issue,” she said.
According to The Sun, she is currently being held in Huatusco, Veracruz.
