A couple from out of town quickly became unwelcome after beachgoers from Sunny Isles Florida witnessed an act of animal cruelty.
27-year-old John Laguerre and 22-year-old Jamarria Wayne were seen torturing a helpless kitten in the ocean. Throwing the animal into the air, the kitten had no where to turn but swim back to her abusers.
After witnessing this horrendous act, animal activist Natalia Martin decided to step in. “The guy started being so aggressive towards me,” Martin told WPLG. “He starts stepping up, he says, ‘Hey, look, this is my cat. This is not your business. I can do what I want.’ And then he was like, ‘If you don’t want me to throw the cat, give me $1,000 right now.’”
Martin captured a video of the couple tossing the kitten repeatedly while she struggled to keep her head above the waves. “They were trying to make her swim and the cat was so scared, she was passing out already. She was half-alive.”
After Martin’s less than civilized interaction with the couple, she decided to call beach security who subsequently summoned the local police.
According to the New York Post, after police arrived and informed the couple they would have to leave the beach for violating the local beach animal policy. Laguerre was uncooperative and began yelling profanities as officers wrestled him to the ground. Wayne also started yelling, even threatening to bite one of the officers.
Both were arrested. Laguerre was charged with animal cruelty and resisting arrest, each misdemeanors. Wayne was charged with attempted battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
Martin wrapped the kitten in a towel as she filled out the police report, later adopted the kitten and found her a new home.
