An American woman held captive in Nigeria has been freed, having paid a terrible toll for being scammed under false pretenses of love.
The unnamed victim was rescued by the Ogun State Annex’s Police Intelligence Response Team, after they learned she was being held in a Lagos hotel.
The woman’s captor, Chukwuebuka Obiaku, persuaded the retired civil servant to leave the USA for Nigeria, where he married her before holding her captive.
Obiaku extorted around $48,000 from her before taking control of her credit and debit cards.
According to the Daily Mail, the police reported that Chukwuebuka also “used the victim as a front to defraud her associates and other foreign personalities and companies.”
Obiaku will be charged at a later date under the Cybercrime Prevention/Prohibition Act of 2015.
