Police in England carried out a controlled explosion on a “suspicious car” that was actually parked outside the station by an officer.

Bomb disposal experts sealed off roads surrounding the building and conducted the explosion after an unattended Vauxhall Corsa was spotted outside of the Workington police station, the BBC reported.

After the explosion police learned officers had parked the vehicle outside of the station after helping its owner who had taken ill.

Police explained that overnight duty were concerned about “suspicious objects” in the vehicle which were unexplained due to “an internal communications error,” according to The Telegraph.

“Due to an internal communication error, officers dealing with this morning’s incident were not aware of this and their actions were conducted, and prioritized, with the safety of the public in mind,” a police spokesperson said. “Following the controlled explosion, the vehicle was searched and the suspicions were negated.”

Insp. Ashley Bennett said police contacted the vehicle’s owner to issue an apology and added the incident will be investigated.

“We have made contact with the owner of the vehicle, explained the situation and have apologized to him,” she said. “The constabulary will review this incident and will take on board any learning.”
