The State of California is enacting a new state law on New Year’s that allows alcohol manufacturers and sellers to offer free or discounted rides home if a consumer is too drunk to drive.

Assembly Bill 711 will allow alcohol manufacturers and licensed sellers can offer free or discounted rides through ride-sharing groups, such as Uber or Lyft. The program will even extend to traditional taxi services.

Naturally, Lyft and Uber are in support of the new law.

“We are always supportive of efforts to reduce drunk driving,” Uber said in a statement sent to NBC 7. That is why we have partnered with MADD over the past few years to promote safety and getting a designated driver.”

Currently, 44 other states -and Washington DC- allow liquor manufacturers to pay for free or discounted rides.

The measure was introduced by Assemblyman Evan Low, a Democrat from Cupertino.
