A Florida man shot a trespassing cat that decided to defecate on his property, causing the cat to be paralyzed and requiring euthanization.
A 69-year-old man in Ormond Beach has outraged his neighbors at the Pinewood Trailer Park and may face animal cruelty charges after shooting the trespassing cat with a BB gun, leading to the animal being paralyzed.
“It was the most saddest thing to see a little animal, literally tears running down its face,” resident Heidi Hatheaway said.
The cat – one of nine cats belonging to 60-year-old Hung Nguyen – was found by Hatheway’s son. Deputies day the cat was later euthanized.
The BB gun-toting resident told deputies that the cat “looked at him like he owned the place” before defecating on the lawn, which prompted the man to open fire. Despite having shot at many cats and never hitting one, the BB found its mark.
“It was not my intention to hurt that cat,” the man said. “All I wanted to do was get it out in front of my walkway, stop pooping. For the flies and the smell is just horrendous.”
Hatheaway says that in addition to animal abuse, the man’s accuracy is a troubling matter.
“If he’s not accurate of how he shoots, what’s to stop him from shooting anybody?” she asked.
The man – who is on disability due to health issues – fears losing his source of income over a felony charge of animal cruelty.
“I’ll be homeless. Might be a death sentence for accidentally shooting some cat,” he lamented.
According to Click Orlando, the state attorney’s office is reviewing the case to see if there is enough evidence for felony charges to be brought against the man.
