As Jeffrey Clayon Riegel was nearing death, among the Eagles’ fan last wishes was to have eight team members serve as his pallbearers.

Why?

“So the Eagles can let him down one last time,” according to an obituary published in the Press of Atlantic City.

According to the obituary, it was not a “beautiful” golf day when Mr. Riegel, 56, of Port Republic, died on Aug. 18 to “finish a long overdue game of golf.”

He was described as a “wonderful husband, uncle, brother and son” who was quick with kind words for others. Except maybe for his beloved Eagles, who clearly disappointed him. Or, that may have just been his sense of humor, considering he told his oncologist “just call me Lucky” as he was nearing death, the obituary said.

One friend posted a tribute online that read, “With Jeff, the glass was always half full. He had a gift how to make light of any situation and keeping people calm.”

His family and the Eagles did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Services for Mr. Riegel, a 1978 graduate of Mainland High School who was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 351, are scheduled for Thursday. Arrangements are being handled by Wimberg Funeral Home, in Galloway Township.
