Deputies barely rescue bear that somehow became closed inside car

A Colorado sheriff’s office said deputies rescued a bear that somehow managed to close itself inside a resident’s car.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Deputies Tillman and McLaughlin responded Tuesday morning to a call about a bear inside a car and they arrived to find an intriguing mystery — the bear was inside the car with no broken or open windows, and the door latches didn’t seem like they could be operated by the animal’s laws.

“And yet somehow this medium-sized bear managed to open a door, crawl inside and close the door behind him,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

The deputies decided to pop the hatch of the vehicle to free the bear, but they soon discovered the key fob didn’t work and the doors were stuck shut due to being ripped apart from the inside by the trapped bear.

“Deputy McLaughlin had to manually open it while Deputy Tillman stood nearby with his shotgun just in case,” the Facebook post said. “Thankfully once the door was open the bear had no interest in deputies, only in getting back into the wild.”

The post included a video of the bear’s rescue.

“Good work, deputies, and we hope this young bear stays far away from cars in the future!” the sheriff’s office wrote.
